Choosing a Woodburner

Choosing a Woodburner:

what size?

As a rule of thumb, a 5kW stove will suit a medium size room with average insulation, but to calculate this accuratley we use stove size calculators.

This is a good one - https://www.glowing-embers.co.uk/blog/output-calculator/

Stoves over 5kW will require an air vent of about the size of a 10p piece per kW.

Woodburning or multifuel?

If a stove is a woodburner only, it should never be used with coal; if it is a multifuel coal or wood can be burned.

Defra exempt Woodburners?

Cleanburn or DEFRA exempt woodburners: Some areas, including a lot of Oxford City are covered by 'Smokeless zones'. If you live in such an area, you will need to get a woodburner that is DEFRA exempt/Cleanburn to burn wood in these areas. Your local authority can tell you if that is the case.

how much should i pay?

Lower priced woodburners can heat a room well. From £500 up woodburners tend to have higher build quality and better flame control. The market is quite competitive, so price is usually a good indicator of quality.

WHere to buy a woodburner?

We can supply any woodburner available, but if you wish to purchase it yourself, you are welcome. You can check with us that it will be suitable before ordering. Many are available online, but the market leaders mostly sell through the dealer network. Our local dealer is Manor House Stoves in Garsington, they are very happy to supply a woodburner for us to install.

These can give a good indicator of how a woodburner is to live with, though there seems to be a positive bias toward lower priced ones.
